This video documents the 13th Seoul Mediacity Biennale (SMB13) pre-Biennale II Notes for a Séance held at Seoul Museum of Art on November 30, 2024. Introducing ideas informing the curatorial imagination for the 13th edition of the Biennale, Part 3 titled “Contemporary Techno-Mysticism and Its Discontents,” Hallie Ayres examined the relationship between contemporary technology, spirituality, and cognitive development. Analyzing how post-Fordist capitalism has shifted from the automation of the body to the automation of the mind and spirit, Ayres illuminated how this transition has wrought significant changes in the ways in which technology is shaping labor as well as consciousness, spirituality, and cultural relativism. A Q & A session with all three Artistic Directors of SMB13 followed the presentation.
