Ann Lee - Witness Screen

2002

WITNESS SCREEN: Ann Lee is an infographic character that Pierre Hughye and Philippe Parreno brought with the goal of removing her from the audiovisual manga universe. Given her rudimentary characteristics, the character was meant to live a brief life and therefore acquired the status of a survivor, developing her own story and psychology through the use of different authors such as an actor. The difference between an actor and Ann Lee is that the latter proposes a vision with no background whereas she exists solely on the screen. Based on this, I would like this manga (and logo) who attempts to free herself and construct her own story, to take on the social image of a physical person who is held within an economic system and who she will socially replace by exposing herself. The physical person in question will be extracted from her daily economic life for a determined period of time. The candidate will be chosen according to her full-time job, but at the same time will be animated by the desire to carry out an activity that belongs only to her. I propose to pay her with the production budget a monthly salary that is equivalent to her previous wages. This experience of recovered time will be documented in a diary and transported to the screen via Ann Lee. The diary will set the scenario and the production company will execute it. The scenario will be adapted to expose this new schedule with no time constraints. The title “Witness Screen” refers to the witnesses whose faces have been masked or anonymous people who appear on reality shows. The character of Ann Lee will be presented with her back to the viewer, her chest facing the sea. The graphic feature of her hair will be influenced by Hokusai design in an attempt to create a memory of the plastic manga. The 3D version of this character will be placed on a seascape video background (GO-MOTION). The character’s style and a sea breeze cause gestures that give way to hair movements that resemble a coded language. Four months will be compressed into four minutes and a few changes in clothing and hairstyle will signify the lapse of time. At the end of the text, Ann Lee will turn around and remain still for three seconds in the position of the original drawing of her from Japan. Black will fade out and be replaced by the credit titles.
