Between Jesus and Buddha

2002

Lee Yong-Baek photographed the still images of Jesus Christ shedding blood and those of Buddha gently smiling and disregarding historical facts about the time and space surrounding the figures. Using computer technology, the artist creates a unique visual sequence in which Jesus turns into Buddha and Buddha into Jesus with different facial expressions. The artistic result attained from this process is a repetition of emotional extremes from a state of despair to bliss.
To achieve the effect he was aiming for Lee removed the original still images of Jesus and Buddha after he had synthesized them. The viewers are left to watch the process in which two of the most important figures in human history are transformed into each other. Ultimately the viewers do not look at Christ nor Buddha but a digitalized simulation.
