This work documents a small memorial service that took place on the 20th anniversary of the death of the late Moon Ok-ju, who was the first to testify about the Japanese military’s “comfort women” issue. After the artist received letters from several people who attended a regular rally in front of the Japanese Embassy in Korea every Wednesday at noon, as well as from visitors to Heeum (the Museum of Military Sexual Slavery by Japan) in Daegu, she brought them to Moon’s grave and spread them out. Next, she walks around the grave and sings a song to soothe the soul of the deceased.

HongLee, Hyunsook creates works that combine installation, performance and video, adopting an oppositional stance toward the contexts and physical parameters of a specific place. This artistic attitude is a manifestation of resistance to patriarchal society and its gaze as well as the energy that intersects with a specific environment. Through this process, the artist’s body becomes an important medium, instilling HongLee’s artworks with essential questions based on a clear structure, eliciting natural participation and solidarity, and questioning schematic lifestyles and human-centered thinking.
