The 13th Seoul Mediacity pre-Biennale STATION - IMAGE COMMUNITY is organized to examine the conceptual dimensions of media art within the continuum of its history and to activate the cultural position of Biennale as a generative art institution via meta study on its accumulated resources as well as creating new production and circulation. For the last 27 years, the Biennale has explored the complexities of changing contemporary media and technology landscapes and shared thoughts on political, reflective and prospective aspects of artistic experience. This pre-Biennale follows the inaugural pre-Biennale in 2022 entitled STATION held at Nam-Seoul Museum of Art, which explored the fundamental experience of media initiated from the act of ‘seeing’ throughout Lee Kyuchul’s perceptual experiments in the 1980s. This year, we propose an inquiry into the corporeal senses of mediating and mourning learned by Rim Dong Sik’s practice of building up a relationship with nature.

Presented artworks collect and reconstruct the landscapes of cities and collectives which subsequently become an ‘image community’ that creates participations and common sensibilities through art, as well as questioning the role and position of Seoul Mediacity Biennale. Artworks presented in the previous Biennales by artists including Mackerel Safranski, Koo Donghee, Ahn Kearn-Hyung, Yangachi, Yangah Ham, Soon Cheol Hong, Che Onejoon, Tamura Yuichiro and Francois Knoetze explore globally networked lives in relation to materialistic media that operates between artificial and reality, fiction and non-fiction. Newly invited artists including Sylbee Kim, Park Hyunki, Imai Norio, Jumana Emil Abboud, Hong Lee Hyun-Sook and Part-time Suite share their thoughts on the body and media as mediators of everyday life in different times. Mark Ramos, Zheng Mahler and Ziyang Wu, who are invited in conjunction with the ARE YOU FOR REAL project, suggest a passage toward experiencing a fragmented machine in which animal and data components compose the contemporary world. New commissions by Jinjoo Kim, Adria Julia, Yo Daham, Leeje, Joo Hwang and Hong Jin-hwon deconstruct and reassemble conventional art mediums and methodologies such as painting, photography, film footage, books, archives, sound and weather in order to expand our perceptual awareness by revealing unseen and unheard arenas of art.

SeMA Bunker, the main venue of this program, was originally built in the 1970s as a secret shelter during Korea’s military regime and is now convening varied programs of SeMA as one of annexes. On the panoramic screen at this respective space, the videos collectively build a ‘meta-narrative’ of the history by representing the dynamic flow of different eras and lives that reflect the “contemporary” landscape of today. In connection with the SMB’s Open Research preparing the integrated web infrastructure opening next year, this program also aims to engage a wider audience and utilize an expanded distribution apparatus in keeping with the diversification of media experiences today. Conceived as a form of media unto itself between the past and the future, the 13th Seoul Mediacity pre-Biennale STATION - IMAGE COMMUNITY will serve as a stopover time for aesthetic participation and production in the present while prospecting the future direction.
