Yangachi, Bright Dove Hyunsook, Gyeongseong, 2010-2024. 4 channel video, color, sound. 12 min 33 sec. Supported by the 13th Seoul Mediacity pre-Biennale. Courtesy of the artist
This artwork is a new adaptation of a real-time performance video recorded on the rooftop of the Seoul Museum of Art, which overlooks an area of central Seoul that preserves Korea's modern and contemporary history. The video’s eponymous character does not think of herself as a consistent subject nor does she experience the existing order and system in detail, but rather exists in the midst of various perspectives, which compels her to wander around the periphery and view the complex situations of reality from a distance. Along with the archetype of “Crying Man”, “Bright Dove Hyunsook” is a metaphor for modern people living under the influence of an overwhelming reality and the distorted virtuality of contemporary society, both of which are exacerbated by the media that has deeply encroached on our lives. Additional video footage incorporates CCTV data culled from SeMA’s interior and exterior spaces, thereby revealing the complex perspectives of contemporary media and our changing perspectives.
Yangachi (b. 1970, Seoul)
Yangachi critically explores the possibilities of new media and its effects on the social, cultural and political aspects of contemporary life. His major projects consider the nature of media and the various dimensions derived from it, including The Bully Association (2002), which likens Korea's social and political landscape to online shopping, Electronic Government (2003), which criticizes the national surveillance apparatus, Middle Korea: Yangachi Episode Ⅰ Ⅱ Ⅲ (2008-2009), which experiments with the narrative influence of media, Bright Dove Hyunsook (2010), which explores the overlap between virtual and real spaces in the city, and When Two Galaxies Merge, (2017) which proposed confluence of two different worldsㅡthat of existential reality and metaphysical dimension. Yangachi participated in Media_City Seoul 2010 Trust and the 10th Seoul Mediacity Biennale Eu Zên in 2018.
