Documentation of Space and Perception Workshop

Lee Kyuchul

Lee Kyuchul, Documentation on Space and Perception workshop, 1993-1994. Single channel video, color, sound. 20 min 15 sec. Video editing: Studio SUJIKSUPYUNG. Private collection

This recording documents a workshop that artist Lee Kyuchul conducted with students in the Department of Sculpture at Chung-Ang University in the 1990s. The students used limited materials such as plastic straws, ice cream sticks and thread to create polyhedrons that could protect raw eggs from impact, and then dropped their handmade structures from the roof of the school building to see if the eggs would break. The contents of the workshop, which explores how abstract space is expressed in three-dimensional shapes and how it relates to life, constitute an experiment realized as an extension of the artist's exploration into notions of “space and perception.”

Lee Kyuchul (1948-1994, Seoul)

In the 1980s, Lee Kyuchul debuted the series Space and Visual Perception, which combined two dimensional reproductions of photographs and polyhedral shapes, proposing a “returning to the sphere.” The artist made a tripod that rotated 360 degrees, explored the optics related to the Earth's rotation, constructed domed polyhedral sculptures using wood and paper, and investigated a world of visual perception built through strict mathematical calculations. These works question whether real space can be fully represented or experienced in art and extend to thoughts about one’s relationship with the world. All of Lee’s extant works were exhibited in the 12th Seoul Mediacity Biennale pre-program Station.
