A forty-two second film by the great American avant-garde filmmaker on the subject of death and dreams. The work was commissioned by a Beijing-based film studio, among contributions of the same length from 41 other filmmakers, and is typical of Anger’s work in its exploration of the occult and the subconscious.

Kenneth Anger (1927–2023)

Kenneth Anger was an influential American avant-garde filmmaker and a pioneering figure in experimental cinema. Born in Santa Monica, California, he made his first major film, Fireworks (1947), at the age of 20, establishing himself as a groundbreaking figure in queer cinema. His “Magick Lantern” cycle, including films such as Scorpio Rising (1963) and Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome (1954), is noted for its experimental use of music and its exploration of occult symbolism. Deeply influenced by the works of Aleister Crowley and the philosophy of Thelema, Anger integrated esoteric and mystical themes throughout his films, presenting ritualistic and symbolic imagery that challenges conventional cinematic boundaries. His films are regarded as essential in the development of non-mainstream cinema, and his lasting influence is evident in the work of filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese and David Lynch.
