Musician Amature Amplifier frequently weaves wordplay into his song titles and lyrics, twisting the sounds of words to create new meaning. For instance, he plays with the similarities between the Korean word for “publisher,” chulpansa, and the word for a “weeping person,” seulpeunsaram, in the song title “Sagyejeol seulpeunsaram,” or “4 Seasons Weeper,” which also references the name of a famous Korean publishing house. Thus what at first sounds like standard love song fare, with the artist singing candidly of his emotions and desires through expressive lyrics paired with minimalist folk melodies that incorporate simple, repetitive chords, in fact contains insightful observations on the complicated, paradoxical aspects of interpersonal relationships, as well as a message of resistance against the social establishment. 4 Seasons Weeper was shot during a trip to Jinguashi (the town in Taiwan where Hou Hsiao-hsien shot his 1989 film A City of Sadness), while Kim Chuja Is Forever captures a group of friends hanging out at night. DCXTB features clips of boys somersaulting on a beach as the song Gomu Inyung (Twist Beggar) from the artist’s first album plays in the background.
