If you get on Line 2 at Yeongdeungpo-gu Office subway station going in the direction of downtown Seoul, you will arrive at Chungjeongno subway station, where Line 2 and Line 5 intersect. Chunhyangjeon is an original Korean story that was written in Hangul the Joseon Dynasty. The story has many different versions and various titles, and nothing is known about its author. Chunhyangjeon is famous for its originality and became popular through pansori, a traditional Korean form of storytelling through singing. It has inspired numerous artworks of various genres in Korea, including film. The artist composed his artwork into three parts. In the first scene, the artist introduces the triangle between the two main characters, Chunhyang and Mongryong, along with Byeon Hak-do. In the second scene, we see the shapes of Chunhyang and Mongryong and in the third scene, the shapes of Chunhyang and Byeon Hak-do. The artist created the figures of each character using electric wires. By recording his voice himself and replaying it on a CD player, the artist’s narration flows through each scene as his voice issues from the neck of each figure. These scenes made using electric wires can be compared to our own lives in an industrial, technological, and information-oriented modern society. Nowadays, people are interested in recovering nature, as well as enhancing the quality of their life and the ecological conditions of their natural environments. In this way, they can be compared to the role of the secret royal inspector in Chunhyangjeon. This artwork serves to remind passengers of this traditional story and invite them to look back on the progress of society and the natural environment.
