Hsu Chia-Wei

Sky Hopinka (Ho-Chunk Nation/Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians) was born and raised in Ferndale, Washington and Palm Springs, California. In Portland, Oregon he studied and taught chinuk wawa, a language indigenous to the Lower Columbia River Basin. His video, photo, and text work centers on Indigenous homeland landscapes and reflects on the means by which culture is embedded in language, among other concerns. His work has played at film festivals including Sundance, Toronto International Film Festival, and the New York Film Festival, and featured in exhibitions such as the 77th Whitney Biennial, the 14th Gwangju Biennial, and the 12th Göteborg International Biennial. He was a guest curator at the 78th Whitney Biennial and has had solo exhibitions at CCA Bard, New York; LUMA, Arles; Frye Art Museum, Seattle; and Kunsthalle Friart, Fribourg.
