Formed in 1998, YOUNG-HAE CHANG HEAVY INDUSTRIES is the pioneering Internet art project of Young-hae Chang and Marc Voge. Typically featuring frenetically moving texts set to jazzy soundtracks, the duo’s Flash animations comically but incisively critique the deep-rooted issues of Korean society, such as the country’s high state of militarization, chaebol business conglomerates, or unchecked consumerism, while also pointing out the contradictions and hypocrisy of the international art system and our seemingly globalized reality. Their work has been shown at the world’s leading institutions, including the Centre Pompidou, Paris; the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and Tate Modern, London. Among the group’s many honors and recognitions are the Rockefeller Foundation’s 2012–13 Bellagio Creative Arts Fellowship and a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grants to Artists award (2001). In an unprecedented move, in 2018 M+ in Hong Kong acquired their complete and growing body of work, including the website, www.yhchang.com.
