This open call program was devised to publicly seek the Artistic Director for the 13th Seoul Mediacity Biennale. The application form was distributed through the pre-Biennale website, and submissions were received online. To attract candidates with diverse curatorial capabilities and to broadly explore the direction of the Biennale, the open call was also advertised in major arts and culture media outlets in Korea and abroad.

The 13th Seoul Mediacity Biennale Outline
– Exhibition Period (tentative): August 26 - November 30, 2025
– Exhibition Venue: All exhibition spaces and annex galleries of Seoul Museum of Art, including the Seosomun Main Building and online

– Project Budget: approximately 2.1 billion KRW (based on the 12th edition)

Open call and Evaluation Overview
– Application Period: June 17 - July 28, 2024
– Document review: August 5 - 26, 2024
– Announcement of interview candidates: August 30, 2024
– Final interview: September 10, 2024
※ Presentation of exhibition plan followed by questions from the interview panel.
※ Foreign language interpretation will be provided.
※ Interviews of candidates based overseas will be conducted online, unless candidates wish to travel to Seoul. Transportation and accommodation not provided.
– Final announcement: October 14, 2024
– Open Position: Artistic Director (individual or team) for the 13th Seoul Mediacity Biennale
– Time commitment: Part-time ※ full-time commitment may be required depending on project schedule.
– Position period: From the effective date of the contract until December 31, 2025.
– Compensation: Approx. 60 million KRW for a 15-month term (individual) / for teams, compensation will be negociated up to a maximum of approx. 80 million KRW

Eligibility Requirements
– Possess expertise related to contemporary art and similar planning experience within the last 5 years
– Ability to contribute to enhancing the domestic and international networking initatives of the Biennale and Seoul Museum of Art
– Possess the capacity for exhibition production, public relations, and communication that aligns with the objectives of the event as the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s representative art biennale
– Be able to visit and stay in Seoul for a sufficient period of time
– Be able to generate detailed plans that correspond with the systems and requirements of Seoul Museum of Art
– Unconditionally support human rights and reject sexual harassment and discrimination

Major roles and responsibilities
– Establish exhibition theme, develop exhibition plan, select artists and artworks, install exhibited works, produce related texts and adhere to budget management policies for the 13th Seoul Mediacity Biennale
– Plan related programs, publication and events of the 13th Seoul Mediacity Biennale
– Coordinate all tasks related to public relations and sponsorship objectives of the 13th Seoul Mediacity Biennale
– Cooperate with Biennale team and other departments of Seoul Museum of Art including participation in related events
– Submit reports throughout the process of completing each task
– Fullfill additional requirements as determined by Seoul Museum of Art

Selection Criteria
– Dedication to contemporary art and media art landscape based on the identity of the Biennale
– A future-oriented exhibition model that connects Seoul’s history, culture and locality to the Biennale’s experimental nature
– An exhibition plan that has not been previously realized and is distinct from other biennales
