Between June 30, 2015 23:59:59 and July 1 00:00:00 (UTC standard), a leap second marked as 23:59:60 was added. A leap second is added or reduced in order to narrow the gap between the solar time, which follows the orbital velocity of the earth, and the atomic time, which is calculated by the vibration of atoms. Since the leap second was first implemented in the 1970s, 1 second has been added on average every 3-4 years. As the leap second is added simultaneously worldwide, the time of addition is different from region to region. For example, in Spain, the leap second was added between 00:59:59 and 01:00:00 on July 1, and in Brazil, between 20:59:59 and 21:00:00 on June 30. The idea of this work is to capture the ‘“created time dimension” of that specific one second, by photographing the moment of the addition of the leap second in 24 different time zones. The participants in each region, whom the artist got in touch with via diverse routes, took a photograph with 1 second shutter speed all at the same time in their respective locations. The original photo data and information of the place where the photo was captured, such as the address or GPS coordinates, were then sent to the artist. The photos taken by the participants are printed on fabric, in proportion to their original file size, and installed as 69 flags throughout the museum.
