25 woodworms, wood,microphone, soundsystem

2009

Using simple and functional components, Swiss artist Zimoun builds architecturally-minded platforms of sound. Exploring mechanical rhythm and flow in prepared systems, his installations incorporate commonplace industrial objects as well as ‘found’ phenomena. In an obsessive display of materials, these works articulate a tension between the orderly patterns of Modernism and the chaotic forces of life. Carrying an emotional depth, the acoustic hum of natural phenomena in Zimoun’s minimalist constructions effortlessly reverberates.
25 woodworms, wood, microphone, soundsystem is an audio-visual recording of woodworms feeding upon a piece of wood. The insects’ movement is invisible to the viewer’s eye, but the space is immersed with the amplified sound of them consuming wood. The hyperrealist acoustics become nearly tactile. while in contrast the video image remains completely still, thus betraying the auditory sensation. This gap between existence and absence, chaotic vitality and compulsively controlled order invokes a paradoxical experience, just as that of a distanced view of a close and intimate microcosm.
