First presented in 2018 on DIS’s streaming platform dis.art, the Public Service Announcement video series draws on elements and forms from popular culture as it offers frank rundowns of economic issues in the United States in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis. Written in collaboration with economist Moritz Shularick, A Good Crisis finds a villainous character from Game of Thrones appearing on Wall Street to analyze the collapse of the US housing market and critically assess whether the subsequent policies were truly effective. Written and narrated by Christopher Glazek, UBI: The Straight Truvada adopts the format of an educational video while transfixing the viewer’s attention with a combination of historical reenactment players, muscular bodies covered from head to toe in glitter, and indifferent fashion models. Likening groundless fears that the widespread availability of IUDs and HIV prevention treatments will promote “hedonism” to present-day anxiety that a universal basic income will encourage “laziness” across society, the video raises questions about whether economic revolution can really deliver sexual, economic, and material freedom.
