Since her 1972 New York debut, Akerman has presented works that reflect on shared or alienated histories, which she reveals through stories of contemporary life and love. Femme Assise is a newly edited version of her 1975 feature film Jeanne Dielman. Set in spaces traditionally associated with women—the kitchen, bedroom, living room—it implicitly portrays the oppressive conditions of spiritual and emotional devastation endured by women living within male-dominated history.
