A.I, entiely on us project "Nonfacial Portrait"

2018

In this project, they invited several painters and asked them to paint portraits of a person. The painters had to follow one rule: “AI should not be able to detect a face in the completed portrait.” While painters were working, cameras watched the canvases to determine if AI could find any face in the paintings and the results were shown on the monitors. The painters would refer the results and make portraits which AI could not find a face from. This is tricky. If a portrait is made to resemble the human subject, the AI would easily see a face. And if a portrait is rendered in a form that is inordinately far from the subject, it would fail to be a portrait. In this exhibition, the artists present diverse forms of portraits completed in different approaches along with videos of the painting processes.
