Sunspring is a short nine-minute film based on a screenplay written by an AI that named itself “Benjamin,” which Ross Goodwin developed in consultation with Oscar Sharp in early 2016. Benjamin writes film screenplays based on a LSTM-RNN (Long Short-term Memory-Recurrent Neural Network) statistical model, which is a type of deep learning algorithm. The duo taught Benjamin a diverse variety of screenplays in the science fiction genre. As a result of its training, Benjamin created the screenplay for Sunspring. The screenplay has many difficult or abstruse sentences that audiences have difficulty understanding. Sharp and the film’s actors interpreted the text of the screenplay as a possible instance of a love triangle occurring in a dark future and represented it in their film. After reading the script, the film’s three actors imbued the robot’s words with meaning through their emotions, gestures, and movement
