Jumana Emil Abboud creates works that dwell in individual and collective narratives of dispossession, loss, and resilience rooted in the Palestinian territory. She weaves together folklore and contemporary accounts to create drawings, videos, performances, objects, and texts exploring sentiments of longing, belonging, and separation that emerge from connections and disconnections to the landscape. Rather than relying on nostalgia to manifest these ideas, she proposes a reimagining of the landscape in the context of human and nonhuman relations, thereby illuminating the deep connections between land and memory. The works presented by Abboud at SMB12 include drawings, sculptures, and a video produced between 2009 and 2017. During that period, she worked with communities across Palestine to collect stories linked to sites of sacred waters that have been lost, forgotten, or erased over time. The resulting works collectively unveil a depiction of Palestinian lands that invoke a space of memory, storytelling, and imagination.
