East Asian Mythology, Education and Art

In this event, two lectures and a discussion explored the intersections of shamanism, myth, and artistic imagination. Pedagogist Kim In-whoe presented his video documentation of major gut (shamanistic rituals) in Korea during the 1980s, examining the educational value and alternative perspectives that these rituals may offer. Mythologist Jung Jae-Seo introduced the East Asian goddess Xi Wangmu (Queen Mother of the West) and reflected on the politics of imagination through the lens of East Asian myths, proposing an artistic discourse rooted in the sensibility of sorcery and emotional resonance with natural settings. The session concluded with a discussion on painting practices, featuring artists Min Joung-Ki, Choi Gene-uk, and Jina Park.
