Working in both fictional and documentary, short and feature-length filmmaking, Kang Sang-woo seeks to amplify and diversify the depiction of marginalized communities in Korean cinema. Observational yet sensual, Kang’s films imagine and reflect the lives of figures such as the nameless protagonist in his first documentary feature Kim-Gun (2019) or the ex-convict in the short Clean Me (2014). Kang’s work has been screened at international venues including the Vancouver International Film Festival, the Seoul Independent Film Festival, the Experimental Film and Video Festival in Seoul, and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul. Kim-Gun was awarded the Grand Prize at the 2018 Seoul Independent Film Festival and Best New Director at the 2019 Busan Film Critics Awards.
