Minerva Cuevas
Minerva Cuevas appropriates imagery and language from multinational corporate advertising to comment on the injustice at the core of certain political, economic, and social systems. The artist incorporates these strategies into works that can range from interventions in public space, such as performances and murals, to videos and sculptural pieces that subvert logos and figures associated with globally recognized brands. In doing so, Cuevas draws attention to harmful economic practices and to the struggles of those protesting against them. Cuevas graduated with a BFA from the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas, Mexico City, in 1997. She has held solo exhibitions at institutions including the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven (2008); the Whitechapel Gallery, London (2009); the Dallas Museum of Art (2018); and daadgalerie, Berlin (2019). In recent years, her work has been featured in group exhibitions at venues ranging from Paris’s Jeu de Paume to Mexico City’s Museo Jumex, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design, Manila. She has participated in numerous international exhibitions, including the 27th Bienal de São Paulo (2006), the 9th Lyon Biennale (2007), the 6th Liverpool Biennial (2010), and the 4th Prospect New Orleans (2017).
