Paul Pfeiffer
Paul Pfeiffer is a sculptor, photographer, and video artist. Pfeiffer’s practice is underpinned by his interest in examining our relationship with popular and celebrity cultures. He often uses postproduction technologies to manipulate existing media images—particularly those from the entertainment industry and sports—and alter the appearances of widely transmitted visual spectacles to complicate concepts of icons and idols, perception and reality in contemporary society. Pfeiffer earned his MFA in 1994 from Hunter College in New York and subsequently spent the year 1997–98 in the Whitney Museum of American Art’s Independent Study Program. Currently based in New York, he has held solo exhibitions at institutions ranging from the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design, Manila (2015), to the Honolulu Museum of Art (2016) and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (2017). Recent international exhibitions include Art in the Age of the Internet, 1989 to Today, Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston (2018); Performa 19 Biennial, New York (2019); and Grace Before Jones: Camera, Disco, Studio, Nottingham Contemporary (2020). In 2000, Pfieffer was the inaugural recipient of the Bucksbaum Award at the Whitney Biennial.
