Tala Madani
Tala Madani is a Los Angeles-based painter and multimedia artist whose work often features middle-aged men, women, and infants. Portrayed in irreverent poses through garish brushstrokes, these characters are simultaneously mocked and exuberant. The comical yet disturbing depictions populating the artist’s work humorously subvert power structures of gender and sex, politics and religion. Madani’s ongoing experimentation with the styles and representational modes of painting extends from drawing upon comics and graffiti aesthetics to making stop-motion animations. She graduated in 2006 with an MFA in Painting from the Yale School of Art, and has held solo exhibitions at institutions ranging from the MIT List Visual Arts Center, Cambridge (2016), to Portikus, Frankfurt (2019), and the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo (2019). Her work has been featured in international exhibitions including the Whitney Biennial 2017, the 16th Istanbul Biennale (2019), and the 5th Ural Industrial Biennial, Ekaterinburg (2019). She will be the subject of a retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, in 2021.
