Command Performance

Vito Acconci, Command Performance, 1974. two-channel video (sound), playback deck, live camera, mixed media. 30 min (loop). Courtesy of the artist and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The 1st Seoul International Media Art Biennale media_city seoul 2000 city: between 0 and 1. Seoul Museum of History. 2000

A single chair illuminated by a spotlight defines the space of this artwork. In the video monitor placed in front of the chair, the artist says, “You’re there where I used to be. I don’t have to be there anymore. You can do it for me now…” When the viewer sits down, the video stops and their own image appears on another video monitor. Through this setup, Acconci confronts the relationship between artist and viewer, as well as self and other, in ways that are alternately comedic and cruel, sadistic and seductive.
