Yeongdeungpo-gu Office subway station is a transfer point for Line 2 and Line 5. On either side of the stairs is an escalator. Each marble staircase is divided into four sections with a total of sixty-four stairs. The length of the transfer corridor is about 40 meters (131 feet), in which there is nothing special for passengers to look at as they come and go here. Recently, however, the path changed. Now, when you get on the escalator, you can hear sounds coming from overhead, where the artist installed sound equipment at the convergence of the ceiling and the top of the wall. The sound installation is also about 40 meters long, so as you ride the ascending escalator a succession of sounds can be discerned: raindrops falling, a rushing stream in a deep valley, and waterfalls. When you approach the top of the escalator, you can hear crashing ocean. If you ride the descending escalator, these sounds are sequenced in reverse. This work is exciting and dynamic; as the automatically escalators move up and down, you also hear the sounds automatically. Because of this sound installation, the subway transfer corridor is more than just a space that efficiently connects one place to another. It is a unique route containing elements of art and culture.
