Halcion Sleep

1994
Rodney Graham, Halcion Sleep, 1994. single-channel video installation (sound). 26 min. Courtesy of the artist. Private collection, London. The 1st Seoul International Media Art Biennale media_city seoul 2000 city: between 0 and 1. Seoul Museum of History. 2000

This 26-minute video captures the artist after ingesting Halcion, a sleeping pill, in a motel room near Vancouver. As he lies unconscious in the back of a minivan, his brother and friend transport him to his downtown apartment. The video is shot through the van’s windows, so that the glow of passing neon lights blurs the line between dream and reality, turning this seemingly simple journey into a surreal passage through consciousness.
