Spell on the City

2012

Our feelings of the city and thoughts on it directly or indirectly influence the city itself again. Also, we impliedly project our hopes and desires on to messages that we send and receive through media. In this mechanized city and among the digitalized citizens, such our emotions and wishes become a spell and float on the real and virtual world. In the artwork, the artists attempt to aesthetically share our individual emotions with Seoul citizens by spelling on this city through the Social Networking Service and by visualizing our desires that would rove in the city. Audiences visiting the museum can tweet their feelings about and hopes for the city on the artists’ Twitter account (@2012seoul) using their smart phones. The program written by the artists analyzes the audiences’ tweets, extracts seven emotions such as happy, sad, feared. surprised, disgusted, angry and neutral, and then sends the amulet corresponding to the emotion to outdoor media boards around Seoul. By doing so. the audiences finally come to spell on Seoul. This program algorithmically generates various digital amulets using its emotion analysis and the audiences’ spells, and displays the amulet images on screen in the exhibition venue. Simultaneously the amulets are also displayed on outdoor media boards at Seoul Square, Samgam DMC, and Eulji Hanbit Media Park on schedule. On the other hand, the spells and amulets of audiences are printed out as a form of receipt, thereby audiences’ taking them out. Here and now, we are looking at our desires projected on to ourselves through the art as a whole of magic and technology.
