Matthew Crawley, Turning on a video camera, opening it up, and poking around in there until it breaks*, 1999. single-channel video. 10 × 15 cm (Installation). 7 min. Courtesy of the artists. The 1st Seoul International Media Art Biennale media_city seoul 2000 city: between 0 and 1*. Seoul Museum of History. 2000

The title literally describes the artist’s actions in this piece. Crawley attaches a video camera to a chair so that its viewfinder lens is hidden from the audience’s sight. He then proceeds to destroy the camera. Throughout this process, the camera records the sounds of its own destruction until it reaches its “death,” when it is no longer capable of capturing either images or sound.
