Seongil Choi · Rike Glaser

Seongil Choi is a designer who investigates materials and processes behind production, particularly focusing on the way daily items are made through alternate routing. He believes that the designed object is the best medium to convey any stories surrounding the final item, including the material and the entire process behind its construction. Choi co-established studio ilio in 2015. Since its opening, the studio’s designers work with the philosophy that the original beauty and function of an object are born from the materials and working processes. Their creative production method, the objects produced, and experiments applied freely cross the line between craftwork and industrial design, and between furniture and installation or sculpture. Rike Glaser is interested in using design as a tool to reflect on contemporary phenomena, for public engagement and social interaction and exploring new methods for education. Since 2015, she is a part of the Common Initiative, a collective of four designers. They ask if design can function as a form of “activated journalism” to unpick and present new ways of understanding contemporary phenomena.
