Hapjungjigu
Founded in Seoul in February 2015, the nonprofit Hapjungjigu is conceived as a peer-led community space where different genres and forms of art practice can be sustained, emerge, and coexist. Drawing on principles of mutual support and enduring commitment to art practices, their program has ranged from exhibitions to publications and seminars, often in collaboration with a wide range of practitioners. Regularly presenting solo projects of artists spanning different generations, Hapjungjigu also organizes group exhibitions that highlight the community’s initiatives, including QueerArch (2019) and READ MY LIPS (2017), exploring queer culture and feminism, and Signs of Bugahyeon-dong (2020) and Platforming Hapjunjigu (2020), addressing concepts of community and locality. Their community has also continued to develop through the Garden of Dogs and Cats, an ongoing workshop program with local residents.
