Monira Al Qadiri
The practice of Monira Al Qadiri draws upon a wide range of references, from literature and music to religious thought, mass media, and the artist’s personal experience. She often reappropriates forms and elements from existing materials, from industrial oil drill bits to television footage, to create fantastical videos, sculptures, installations, and performances that explore cultural identity, social contradictions, the dynamics of global capital, and petroleum-related issues in the context of the contemporary Middle East. Now based in Berlin, Al Qadiri received a PhD in intermedia art from Tokyo University of the Arts in 2010. She has held solo exhibitions at international institutions including Gasworks, London (2017); the Sursock Museum, Beirut (2017); Kunstverein Göttingen (2019); and Haus der Kunst, Munich (2020). In 2018 she was included in both the 9th Asia Pacific Triennial and the 6th Athens Biennale.
