Hsu Che-Yu
Hsu Che-Yu works with animation, visual art, and installation to investigate the effects of media images and visualization technologies on individual and collective constructions of memories. By juxtaposing a multiplicity of devices, ranging from different types of narration to photography and 3D renderings, Hsu’s films expose the interplay between fiction and reality, as well as the virtual and the actual, that determines how histories and memories are perceived. Hsu received his MFA from the Graduate Institute of Plastic Arts at Tainan National University of the Arts in 2013. He has participated in international exhibitions and film festivals including the 12th Shanghai Biennale (2018), the 1st Bangkok Biennale (2018), and the 14th Experimental Film and Video Festival in Seoul (2017). In 2016, he was awarded the grand prize of the 14th Taishin Arts Award for his multimedia installation Microphone Test (2015), shown the previous year at Taipei Fine Arts Museum.
