Liu Chuang is a Shanghai-based artist who works with video, sculpture, found objects, and installation. Often imagined in conjunction with greater historical and ecological arcs, Liu’s works trace the social, cultural, and economic transformations of contemporary China. Weaving narratives that connect micro and macro, past and present, fiction and reality, he explores how dramatic yet intricate changes in nature, tradition, demography, cutting-edge technology, and socioeconomic systems affect individuals and their engagement with the world at large. Liu recently participated in group exhibitions organized by institutions such as Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (2020); Centre Pompidou, Paris (2019); Astrup Fearnley Museet, Oslo (2017); and Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris (2016). Other international exhibitions include the 12th Taipei Biennial (2020); the 5th Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art, Ekaterinburg (2019); and the 10th Shanghai and the 10th Gwangju biennials (both 2014).
