Five Spells & A Song is a debut performance from artist Mercedes Azpilicueta that takes the form of a multi-lingual operatic Pansori sung by vocalist Lee Seung-hee. The performance’s script is composed of five poems that present histories and struggles of migration and consider the construction of communities through displaced identities. Through the testimonies of Korean women who migrated to Argentina, the work looks at generational movement and the establishment of Korean communities in Buenos Aires, focusing on their significant role in the emergence of the local textile industry beginning in the late 1960s.

Lee Seung-hee is a Korean traditional musician whose work goes beyond the boundaries of traditional music by integrating various genres, including music, theater, and musical theater. Lee demonstrates the potential for developing traditional music through her adaptations of modern novels and stories into Pansori performances. Her notable works include Pansori shorts such as Excuse Me and A Pansori Short Story: Joo Yo-seop, An Ugly Person/Murder, as well as Pansori adaptation of Brecht's Sacheon-ga and the musical Arirang, among others.

The performance is open to the public and registration is not required.
