놀란 오스왈드 데니스는 전통적인 학제 간 담론을 넘어 보다 다양한 학문의 지식과 시각의 통합을 시도하는 현대미술가입니다. 작가의 작업 전반에 작용하는 ‘공간에 대한 흑인 의식’이라는 관념은 탈식민주의 이론에서 나타나는 물질적, 형이상학적 특성에 관한 성찰을 이끌어냅니다. 이때 ‘공간’은 장소적 개입이 아닌 제도에 대한 개입을 통해 탐구되며, 나아가 시간과 공간의 역사에 관한 질문으로 발전됩니다.
작가는 남아프리카공화국 요하네스버그와 케이프타운 굿맨 갤러리(2021, 2019 외), 프랑스 파리 팔레 드 도쿄(2021), 스페인 바르셀로나현대미술(2018), 영국 리버풀비엔날레(2023), 스위스 뉴사텔 칸아트센터(2022), 콩고민주공화국 킨샤사 영콩고비엔날레(2019), 미국 클리블랜드 FRONT트리엔날레(2022) 등에서 열린 다수의 전시에 참여한 바 있습니다. 그는 예술가 그룹 NTU 및 Index Literacy Program(ILP)의 창립 멤버이며, 현재 요하네스버그대학교의 VIAD연구센터의 일원으로 활동 중입니다.
Nolan Oswald Dennis is a para-disciplinary artist. Their practice explores “a black consciousness of space”—the material and metaphysical conditions of decolonisation—questioning histories of space and time through system-specific, rather than site-specific interventions.
Their work has been featured in exhibitions at the Liverpool Biennial (2023); FRONT triennial, Cleveland (2022); CAN, Neuchatel (2022); Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2021); Goodman Gallery, Johannesburg, Cape Town, London (2021, 2019 etc.); the Young Congo Biennale, Kinshasa (2019); MACBA, Barcelona (2018); among others. They are a founding member of the artist group NTU, a research associate at the VIAD research center at the University of Johannesburg, and a member of the Index Literacy Program.
