차학경Theresa Hak Kyung Cha
한국에서 태어난 재미 개념미술가 차학경은 1970년대 중반부터 1982년 31세로 짧은 생을 마감할 때까지 이산과 상실을 주제로 한 작품 세계를 일궈나가며, 아티스트북, 메일아트, 퍼포먼스, 음향, 영상, 영화, 설치 등 다양한 장르와 매체를 넘나드는 작품을 남겼습니다. 작품 세계의 기저에는 프랑스의 정신분석학적 사고에 입각한 영화이론이 깔려 있으며, 이와 동시에 샤머니즘, 유교사상, 가톨릭주의 등의 여러 종교적 관점이 깃든 문화적이고 상징적인 요소들이 작품의 주요 모티프였습니다. 작가의 작품은 미국 캘리포니아주 버클리미술관과 뉴욕의 아티스트스페이스,
휘트니미술관, 브롱크스미술관 등에서 전시되었으며, 2001년 작가의 주요 회고전 《The Dream of the Audience: Theresa Hak Kyung Cha (1951-1982)》가 UC버클리의 버클리미술관 및 태평양 영상자료원에서 개최된 후 서울을 포함한 세계 다섯 개 도시에서 순회된 바 있습니다.
From the mid-1970s until her death at age 31 in 1982, Korean-born artist Theresa Hak Kyung Cha created a rich body of conceptual art that explored displacement and loss. Her works included artist books, mail art, performance, audio, video, film, and installation. Although grounded in French psychoanalytic film theory, her art is also informed by far-ranging cultural and symbolic references, from shamanism to Confucianism and Catholicism. Her work has been shown at the Berkeley Art Museum, Berkeley, CA; Artists Space, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, and the Bronx Museum of Art, New York, among other venues. A major retrospective exhibition of her work, entitled The Dream of the Audience:
Theresa Hak Kyung Cha (1951-1982) was organized by University of California, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive in 2001, and traveled to five cities, including Seoul, Korea.
