program

In contemporary art, a program refers to a series of planned activities that follow a sequence in which specific inputs yield expected outcomes. Exhibitions, workshops, publications, talks, screenings, and performances all fall under the umbrella of programming. At the same time, the term “program” is used in general art discourse to refer to mediatory structures that facilitate interactions between audiences and various participants, primarily through associated temporary events centered on exhibitions. In time-constrained biennales, various programs serve as opportunities for audiences to actively engage with and discover new meanings and values. Programs that focus on diverse participants – including children, adolescents, the elderly, socially marginalized groups, and specialists – create spaces for inquiry and critical discourse beyond exhibition venues, making visible SMB’s practices as a historical actor.
