The 1st SEOUL in MEDIA 1988–2002, was held from October 7 to 20, 1996, at the Seoul Museum of Art (formerly the Seoul 600 Year Memorial Hall), as well as on urban electronic billboards and bank information TVs, was established as an annual project focusing on the changes in media and the urban environment, while creating a space for related contemplation. The project’s title symbolized the 1988 Seoul Olympics and the 2002 World Cup Korea/Japan as a specific point for Seoul, abd it presented the project’s direction in exploring urban culture and life, where multi-layered premodern elements and modern transformations coexist.
