Nam June Paik earned his distinction as the forerunner of video art as a result of his forwardthinking artistic endeavors that anticipated the digital world of the 21st century, and his lifelong contributions to the development of Korean art are as profound as his position in the canon of global art history. After moving to Japan during the Korean War and studying contemporary music, Paik participated in international avantgarde art movements such as Fluxus in Germany and the United States, eventually returning to his home country after 35 years overseas. Paik’s installation Seoul Rhapsody (2002), which is permanently installed in the lobby of the Seoul Museum of Art, screens seminal video works such as Good morning Mr. Orwell (1984) and Bye Bye Kipling (1986). Paik participated in the 1st SEOUL in MEDIA 1988–2002 (1996) and media_ city seoul 2000 city: between 0 and 1 (2000).
