In the 1980s, Lee Kyuchul debuted the series Space and Visual Perception, which combined two dimensional reproductions of photographs and polyhedral shapes, proposing a “returning to the sphere.” The artist made a tripod that rotated 360 degrees, explored the optics related to the Earth’s rotation, constructed domed polyhedral sculptures using wood and paper, and investigated a world of visual perception built through strict mathematical calculations. These works question whether real space can be fully represented or experienced in art and extend to thoughts about one’s relationship with the world. All of Lee’s extant works were exhibited in the 12th Seoul Mediacity pre-Biennale program Station.
