
Rachael Rakes is a curator, writer, and scholar working with a focus on collaborative and research-based practices. She was recently the Curator of Public Practice at BAK basis voor actuele kunst, Utrecht (2019-2022), and the Head Curator and Manager for the Curatorial Programme at De Appel, Amsterdam (2017-2019). Rakes is a screening committee member for the Currents section of the New York Film Festival, a contributing editor for Infrasonica, and with artists Onyeka Igwe and Laura Huertas Millan, operates the research and curatorial collective, Counter Encounters. Rakes is a part-time faculty member at the Parsons School of Design and the KASK school for Curatorial Studies. As an institutional and independent curator, Rakes has organized dozens of exhibitions, programs, and conferences around the world. A previous publishing professional, she worked at Verso Books, The Brooklyn Rail, the the Feminist Press, and AK Press She widely publishes essays, curatorial texts, interviews, and criticism and is recently the co-editor of the anthologies Toward the Not-Yet: Art as Public Practice (2021, BAK), and Practice Space (2019, NAME/De Appel), among others.
