This is a video documentation of the lecture “Spies in the Gray Zone” by Korean Studies scholar Pak Noja (Vladimir Tikhonov), delivered on October 23, 2014. The lecture was held as the third session of Part 1, “Why Ghost, Spy, Grandmother?”, within the conference Miracles, Violence, Disorders and Spirits (괴력난신), co-organized by SeMA Biennale Mediacity Seoul 2014 and the Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation. Vladimir Tikhonov explored the actuality of the Cold War/Hot War in Asia beginning with the case of ‘Spy Sorge’ and through present time, this lecture provided historical context for understanding Tomoko Yoneda’s photography series The Parallel Lives of Others—Encountering with Sorge Spy Ring, presented in the Biennale.
