project

SMB operates within certain constraints – a fixed two-year period, allocated budget, and limited personnel – to fulfill specific purposes and requirements. Since 2022, each edition of SMB has consisted of two projects: the pre-Biennale and the main exhibition. Any project that takes place within a temporary period of time soon becomes an event of the past and can only be revisited through various forms of records. In his essay The Loneliness of the Project (2002), aesthetician Boris Groys states that artistic documentation via text, image, video, and sound (in addition to artworks themselves) does not directly reproduce the “life-lived-in-art,” but instead serves as a reference to artistic activities and practices thereby transforming into biopolitical art. For SMB, which has continuously evolved in response to shifting public backgrounds and objectives, project documentation is a crucial activity that generates values and meanings beyond the project itself.
