city

SMB actively engages with the evolving environment of the city by making use of various media and cultural platforms as conceptual exhibition spaces, expanding beyond the limitations of traditional exhibition venues. SMB has always reinterpreted Seoul’s history and temporality as an expanded form of media. As a result, the city itself becomes a temporary site for the production, distribution, and education of contemporary cultural and artistic discourse under the auspices of SMB. In anticipation of the turn of the 21st century, Seoul Metropolitan Government pursued a development strategy focused on “qualitative growth” and announced plans to establish a sustainable, future-oriented district within the city of Seoul known as Sangam Digital Media City (DMC). In alignment with this strategic vision, SMB01 city: between 0 and 1 (2000) was launched as a festival dedicated to the “advancement of a mature media culture.” Today, SMB remains a leading contemporary art biennial with global recognition.
