technology

The word “art” originates from the Latin ars and the Greek techne. Prior to the Renaissance – when the definition of art was not clearly established – art was regarded as equivalent to technology; However, through humanistic philosophy and conceptual shifts, its meaning has gradually evolved in conjunction with changing social conditions. British art historian Ernst Gombrich argues that Art (as a proper noun) does not have any intrinsic meaning, but is rather an activity that varies across chronological time and geographic location. In Korea, the concept of art was first introduced during the country’s period of modernization in the late 19th century, when it was initially perceived as a form of practical technology. It was not until the 1920s that institutions such as museums and collections were established in Korea to distinguish art from technology. In SMB, technology is understood in a more complex sense – as a methodology that enables various artistic expressions as well as a space that reflects aesthetic and psychological states.
