network

The term network, meaning a closely interconnected system that resembles a web, encapsulates both the technological and conceptual conditions of SMB. In its early stages, SMB expanded digital concepts through physical networks of spaces beyond conventional exhibition venues, such as urban electronic billboards and subway stations. Over time, SMB has increasingly showcased works that respond to technological networks and the contemporary concerns they elicit, while also fostering connections (networking) within the local art scene by cataloguing and distributing information about various other exhibitions and events in Seoul taking place concurrently with SMB. More recently, SMB has aimed to recognize the organic relationship between cultural clusters of the city and physical networks outside the museum – an approach first introduced by SEOUL in MEDIA (1996) and SMB01 (2000) – and to integrate related programs.
