Space and Perception 1988-3 is a photo sculpture in which the surface of a hemispherical shape is lodged within a cube and wrapped with photographs of Gyeongbokgung Palace standing in a horizontal line. While Lee’s abstract and irregular patterns of beach landscapes envisioned three-dimensional images in a rough manner, here the artist flexibly produced a three-dimensional recreation of the precise and simplified patterns of Gyeongbokgung Palace. The work’s scale more than doubled from that of Lee’s previous sculptures, hinting that his process of undertaking equivalent experiments was nearing its conclusion. Among various records provided by secondary sources, Lee’s practice of placing the same photographs at different angles revealed his experimental examination of the relationship and balance between perception and geocentricity.
