Space and Perception 1990-2 recreates an image of coastal scenery from the vantage point of a rocky island surrounded by the sea. Compared with Lee’s related works, a slightly different sculptural attempt is made in this piece, with his signature hemispherical form being recessed into a cylindrical structure that faces upward when it is laid flat. The landscape image covering the surface completely wraps around the camera, leaving a shadow at the center of 360-degree image that is cast by the sun shining on the artist’s head while he took the photo. A stick situated on one side of the image allows the viewer to gauge the scale of the landscape, and although it was designed to be viewed from above, extended viewing of the work fosters a strong sensibility that the viewer is standing in the space and observing the surrounding landscape themselves.
